Why Musician Photography is so important…

With my musician photography, I work hard to make sure that I can represent your music in a visual format. Let’s face it – you put a lot of hard work and hours of practice into making your music, and I believe that it should only be complemented with professional photos that represent you (and your band) accurately.

In order to accomplish the best representation for your musical career, a lot of things are taken into consideration, such as:

  • Music Genre – We want images that will represent your music genre, so that someone won’t go out and buy your CD thinking they’re getting the next Brittney Spears, but really they’re getting something closer to Slayer.
  • Target Audience – Also we’re looking to appeal to the right target audience, including age group, culture, etc. This helps tp prevent sending your flashy rock band promo pics out to Senior homes.
  • Location – The location of your photo shoot can show a lot more about you to your viewers, so we’ll get to discuss where your photos should be taken, what time of the day, and if you’ll need to bring beer.
  • Other Considerations – All other requests can be accomodated (within reason!) to make sure that you get the photos you’re looking for. I’ve shown up at 11:30PM to take photos in an outdoor shed (and it had just snowed and was freezing), just to give you an idea of the dedication I put into getting great photos for your musical career.

What you’ll get from a photo shoot…

In order to make sure you get the most options for your images, you’ll be getting the following.

High Resolution PSD Files – A PSD (photoshop document) file is a large file that can be opened in most versions of Adobe Photoshop. You’ll be given a flattened image so that you can use it to create posters, stick your logo on it, and do just about anything else photoshop can do to it. Also, these files can be given to a graphic designer or art designer to be put on your album cover, t-shirts, etc. without having to be compressed or have any loss of quality. Which leads me into what you’ll be getting next……

High Resolution JPEG Files – These files are similar to high resolution PSD files, but in the sense that they’re JPEG images that can be viewed on any computer. These files are a bit more compressed, and have less file size than their PSD big brothers, so you can transfer them around a bit easier (and full screen your image on any computer you feel like).

Low Resolution JPEG Files – Lastly, these are the photos you can stick on Facebook, MySpace, your own website, or e-mail to your mom. They’ve got a small resolution that will upload quickly, and are small enough to fit on all of your fans’ computer screens without them having to scroll up and down.

Also, some packages include custom graphic design and logo design, to get your band name on all of your photos. More about that is listed below.

What you can do with your Musician Photographs

In making a career out of your music, it’s important to know exactly what you can do with your musician photographs. There are a few different things I’d like to outline below that can help you to understand why having these photos are important, and what you really can do with them once you get them.

  • Send them in with your Demo CD to a label – In the multimedia world, record labels are looking for more than just how you sound. You’ve got to be able to look good in videos, perform live, etc., and they’ll want to take a look at you before they make any moves. By the way, “looking good” doesn’t always mean having a pretty face, as we’re all aware of some successful musicians who are anything but pretty.
  • Market yourself on the internet – As previously mentioned, you can put some of the photos right on your website straight out of the box. I read a while ago that 80% of all ticket sales happen on the internet, so it’s pretty safe to assume that anyone looking to hear your music will look you up on line. Also you can use the PSD files to make banners, MySpace buttons, etc. to pimp out your internet presence.
  • Put them on a lot of cool stuff – With today’s technology, it isn’t too hard to print photos directly onto a variety of mediums (a.k.a. cool stuff). T-shirts, hoodies, stickers, posters, and handouts are just a few examples of how you can get your image on things that your fans will love.

Concert Photography

As another aspect of my business, I also offer concert photography for musicians. This can be done as a way of getting photos out to fans, as part of a special event, or for just general marketing purposes.

If you’d like more information about getting your concert photographed, please inquire here.

Graphic Design and Print Design

As another service I offer for musicians, I do graphic design and print design to make sure you’re accurately represented on the web and in print. These services come with a few packages, but are also available to any musician looking for album art design, new posters or handouts, logo design, and just about any other service you may need to promote yourself.

I know that this area is sensitive with a lot of artists, so in order to make sure we get things right, we can have a consultation about what exactly you’re looking for. From this, we’ll be able to put everything into perspective, and discuss what would represent your music the best based on your personal taste.

To inquire about this, please shoot me an e-mail, and I’ll be glad to talk with you.
